Zonguldak and its surroundings have hosted many civilizations throughout history. Zonguldak's caves stemming from its geological structure, its green nature with abundant rainfall, its mild climate, the mountainous structure of the region divided by valleys, its strong green cover and rivers have attracted attention from different civilizations. Zonguldak is the only place in Turkey that has hard coal mines.

The modern city of Zonguldak became what it is today, with the discovery and operation of the hard coal mine in this district. With the discovery of the hard coal mine in the region in 1829, domestic and foreign capital inflows to the basin started. In this way, the economic and social conditions that emerged as the coal mines opened one after another, created a new settlement in this area where the mines were opened.

Hard coal mining, where 60,000 workers worked at the same time, was the main source of income for the city. Hard coal, which is the basic raw material of energy, has enabled the establishment of many industrial facilities in the city and its surroundings. In addition to coal processing facilities, very important giant facilities for our country have been built on thermal power plants and the iron and steel industry.

In the city, which has developed with the coal industry, many social facilities, housing, health centers, structures and settlements have been established for the needs of the employees. Today, many industrial heritage items that are used for the same or different purposes or remain idle still carry the breezes of the past of the city of Zonguldak.
